Connected Together: Support with the Digital Switchover

Landlines are changing and the UK’s telephone network is going digital. These changes will affect everyone who has a landline they’d like to keep using.

We understand that change can feel overwhelming. With a little support and reassurance, we’re here to help you understand what is happening and ensure you and your loved ones stay connected without disruption.

That’s why we’re proud to support BT’s Connected Together initiative, offering the tools, guidance and confidence to support you and your loved ones through the switch.

What’s happening?

This is a once-in-a-generation, industry-wide upgrade to future-proof the UK’s landlines.

The analogue network that most home phones work on today is no longer fit for purpose and can't keep up with the demands of modern life. That outdated network will be switched off for all landline providers in January 2027. BT’s new home phone service is called Digital Voice.

The landline is not going away, and for most, the switch is simple. No one will be left disconnected.

Here are a few key points to be aware of:

 • The switch won’t cost you a penny
 • Phone numbers won’t change
 • Over 99% of existing handsets are compatible with Digital Voice
 • Benefit from free and helpful calling features such as 3 Way Calling, Voicemail and Call Protect to help block scam calls and notify you of any suspected nuisance calls
 • For those that may need extra support, BT offers free engineer visits to make sure everything is set up correctly and working perfectly. Just make sure to confirm or book the appointment when they get in touch. They’ll take care of the rest.
 • Worried about power cuts? Don’t worry. BT provides back up power solutions meaning you can still make and receive calls during outages, and it’s free for those who need it most.
 • If you don’t have broadband, BT will provide a dedicated landline service allowing you to use your landline in the same way you do today. No new equipment is needed, and you won’t require a home visit from an engineer.

We know that changes like this can raise questions or cause concern. Especially if you or a loved one uses a landline for safety, independence or day-to-day connections.

To make things easier, BT has put together a Conversation Toolkit – a straightforward, practical guide designed to help you talk with a friend or family member about what the switch means and how you can support them. Whether it’s a quick phone call or a relaxed chat over a cup of tea, starting the conversation early can really make a difference.

By sharing this information with others, you can help make sure more people feel informed, reassured and ready for the change.

What you can do

 • Download the Conversation Toolkit on BT’s Connected Together website for helpful advice on how to talk about the switch
 • If you, or someone you know has additional needs and needs extra support making the switch, contact the landline provider. For BT customers they can register via webform on the Connected Together website or by calling the Customer Care team
 • Talk to a friend, neighbour or family member who might benefit from early support.

Start the conversation today.

Shropshire Council Local Nature Recovery Strategy A black and white image of a cow and a cow

AI-generated content may be incorrect.

Have Your Say: New Nature Recovery Map Now Open for Consultation

The draft Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin Local Nature Recovery Strategy (LNRS) has been published and the consultation focuses on two key resources:

 • A strategy document outlining county-wide priorities for nature recovery.
 • An interactive map showing where nature is thriving and where targeted action could deliver the greatest benefits for wildlife, water, soil and climate resilience.

The LNRS identifies key opportunities for supporting nature across the region — and could influence future environmental funding and land management decisions. This is your chance to see what is being suggested and help shape the final strategy. Residents, landowners, community groups, environmental organisations, town & parish councils and businesses across Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin are all encouraged to review the new interactive map and strategy and share their views as part of the consultation to help make the strategy as good as possible.

We hope the strategy and map inspires action and collaboration to help nature thrive.

You can learn more about the LNRS process and how as a Parish Council we can help along with local groups to act use the following page:

https://next.shropshire.gov.uk/environment/shropshire-and-telford-wrekin-local-nature-recovery-strategy/community-groups-and-townparish-councils/

There is a 5 minute "Youtube" video; explainer video , on how to comment on LNRS map, polygons, etc. There is also a helpsheet attached below.

Consultation closes: 15 October 2025

Following the Shropshire wide Local Nature Recovery Strategy we will be drawing up a Pontesbury specific LNRS and we are working closely with Hanwood and Minsterley parish councillors to maximise the impact of any work on nature recovery by creating links and wildlife highways across the area. Over the coming months there will be a number of talks/events locally about how as a local community we can do simple things that will help nature to recover. If you would be interested in joining our Pontesbury Biodiversity Working Group please contact clerk@pontesbury-pc.gov.uk

30th July 2025

A big welcome to our following new councillors:

Ken Day (Pontesbury Ward) -

My principal career in the Fire & Rescue Service in several counties culminated in the role of Divisional Commander with responsibility for the operational efficiency of the 13 fire stations in the West of Shropshire and responsibility for the training progress of all uniformed and non-uniformed personnel. These roles placed me in regular contact with elected members of the Fire Authority. I have fulfilled several roles involving committee work including Vice President of the Institute of Fire Safety Managers and was a trainer and examiner on various fire safety training courses.

On retirement from the Fire & Rescue Service I established a small business in the fire and health & safety sector which was later incorporated in 2003. The business has employed up to 3 persons and up to 2023 included working worldwide with several major tour operators and airlines in auditing vacation properties and crew hotels. The business was part disposed of a little while ago and I intend to retire later this year. I intend to remain very active and will continue with my voluntary role of area Poppy Appeal Organiser which I have held for the past 12 years and will hopefully find a little more time to follow my lifelong hobby of cycling. I feel that i have appropriate experience and qualities and I am happy to offer my services as a Councillor.

Graham Moss (Plealey Ward)

I was originally at school in Shropshire and returned here after qualifying as an architect in 1980. In 1987 I bought a derelict grade II* house in Plealey, and after taking three years to restore it I have lived here ever since. I run an architectural practice which is based at offices adjacent to my home. We work on residential projects including country houses all over the country, from Scotland to Cornwall. I am passionate about the countryside and am a keen long-distance walker. Living where I do I detest suburbanisation of the countryside in any form that it may take: I am not anti development, but insistent on the appropriate calibre of development. For the role ahead I have a good knowledge of the local area and an understanding of planning law.

Louise Jones (Cruckton Ward) -

I work for the NHS and have lived in Cruckton at Horton Lodge farm for the past 18 years. I would be very keen to be considered as a candidate for the Cruckton ward parish council position. I have lived in Cruckton with my husband on our farm for 18+ years so understand all that Cruckton has to offer as well as the challenges we face. I work in the NHS in Wolverhampton at present but previously have worked at the RSH in Copthorne.

The key reasons I would be very interested in becoming the Cruckton ward parish councillor are as follows :

1. A desire to serve and put something back into my community

2. Improve road safety especially along the B4386 Montgomery road.

3. Address key issues such as fly tipping and pollution.

4. Investment in the local community and amenities for youth .

I am a working mother of three teen aged children and my husband is a working farmer and serving police officer .

10th June 2025

A big welcome to our new councillor for Pontesbury Ward, Sarah Wallace Johnson.

"Making a difference to my community is something I would love to be part of, I feel strongly that parish councils are a great way to be more involved with matters that are important on a local level. I have worked in museums for most of my career as a Natural Sciences Conservator and now volunteer for several wildlife organisations in the area such as Natural England, The Friends of Pontesbury Hill & The Stepping Stones Project. Recently I have taken up the position of Project Coordinator for the Middle Marches Community Land Trust's Minsterley Meadows project. Minsterley Meadows has been secured by public donation & a generous grant from the National Lottery Heritage fund. I am keen to be involved with the Green Recovery Strategy for Shropshire and believe parish councils can have a hand in the implementation of some of the actions arising from this, empowering local communities to make a difference to their environment. I have previously been a councillor in the village of Rampton in Cambridgeshire, where I used to live and am now a parish councillor in the village of Minsterley where I live".

There are currently three more parish councillor vacancies. One in Plealey, one in Cruckton and one in Pontesbury ward. If you are interested in being a parish councillor please contact the Parish Clerk: clerk@pontesbury-pc.gov.uk
